DAVAO CITY – Acting Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II said the official date of his oathtaking as vice mayor, along with that of his uncle, acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, has yet to be finalized.
In an interview with reporters after the launching of the Office of the Vice President’s 90th anniversary pop-up exhibit at SM City Davao, Vice Mayor Duterte said the formal oath-taking will take place before or in December.
Vice Mayor Duterte confirmed that his legal team has informed him of the possible schedule. “Our lawyer has already informed me when it will likely be. Maybe before December or in December. I will take my oath together with Mayor Baste.”
Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte – who won a resounding mandate as mayor of Davao City in the May 2025 elections – remains unable to take his post as he continues to be detained at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Vice Mayor Duterte said former President Duterte has been informed of the development. “Mayor Rody already knows about the oath-taking. We already talked about it when I visited him at The Hague,” he said, recalling their conversation.
The acting vice mayor said his grandfather advised him to always prioritize public service in Davao City and throughout the country and remain focused on the needs of the people.
Vice Mayor Duterte identified health, particularly for senior citizens, and education for children, as his top legislative priorities once he formally assumes office. He said these are the common concerns he has seen the most for the past months.
He noted that the lessons he applies in public service came from experience assisting his father, Davao City first district Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, in past government work.
Asked if the former President’s youngest daughter, Veronica, is being considered for a city council post, he said he does not know yet, as no names have been finalized. “Possible, maybe. But we still have to discuss it within the party.”
Vice Mayor Duterte clarified that discussions have not yet taken place regarding who will fill the council seat he will vacate once he officially assumes the vice mayor. He said it will definitely come from the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.
