Alternergy expands to Visayas with new wind investment
Renewable energy (RE) firm Alternergy Holdings Corp. is entering the Visayas grid through its new majority stake in Alegria Cebu wind project.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Monday, Nov. 17, the company’s subsidiary, Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. (AWHC), announced it will acquire 95 percent of MC Project Solutions Inc. (MCPSI), the developer of Alegria Cebu wind.
The wind farm will have around 56 to 80 megawatts (MW) worth of estimated capacity once the project comes to fruition. It has also secured the winning bid during the fourth round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA-4) of the Department of Energy (DOE).
Alternergy’s new acquisition is currently in its pre-development stage and is scheduled to be completed sometime in late 2028.
Gerry P. Magbanua, Alternergy president, believes that this new equity stake has expanded the company’s reach beyond Luzon.
“We are excited to develop our first wind project in Cebu, which marks a significant step in expanding our RE portfolio into the Visayas grid,” he said.
Furthermore, the strategic investment would also contribute to the firm’s goal of reaching one gigawatt (GW) by 2030.
Pedro Pascual, MCPSI’s chief executive officer (CEO), commended Alternergy, stating that, “Given the track record of Alternergy in wind project development, we are pleased to collaborate with Alternergy in developing the first wind energy undertaking on the island of Cebu.”
Alternergy currently aims to develop over 500 MW of RE, including wind, solar, and run-of-river hydropower assets.
Four of its projects are currently under advanced construction, such as the 4.6-MW Dupinga run-of-river, 28-MW Balsik Solana solar, 64-MW Alabat wind, and 128-MW Tanay wind projects. These developments are scheduled to finish sometime between the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2026.
Last month, Alternergy announced that A. Brown Co. Inc. (ABCI) has acquired a 40-percent equity stake in Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp. (ATWC) and Alabat Wind Power Corp. (AWPC) through a ₱2.4-billion investment.
