The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), northeast monsoon or "amihan," and a prevailing shear line will continue to dump rains over several parts of the Philippines, particularly Mindanao and eastern sections of Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Nov. 16.

PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said rainfall information has been issued over parts of Mindanao due to ongoing rain-bearing weather systems.

“Sa ngayon po, may naka-issue na rainfall information sa may bahagi ng Mindanao (As of now, rainfall information has been issued for parts of Mindanao),” he said.

“Sa ngayon po kasi ay nakararanas ng mga katamtaman hanggang sa kung minsan ay malalakas na pag-ulan dulot ng ITCZ ang bahagi ng Mindanao particular na nga sa may bahagi po ng Caraga, gayundin sa may Soccksargen, ilang bahagi ng Zamboanga Peninsula, at Northern Mindanao (Mindanao is experiencing moderate to at times heavy rains due to the ITCZ, especially in Caraga, Soccksksargen, parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao).”

According to the weather specialist, no tropical cyclone is being monitored inside or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

“Makikita niyo po, wala tayong bagyong mino-monitor sa loob at labas ng Philippine Area of Responsibility (We are not monitoring any tropical cyclone inside or outside the PAR),” said Badrina.

“Maliit nga ’yung posibilidad na magkaroon tayo ng bagyo sa mga susunod na araw (There is a low chance of a storm forming in the next few days).”

The state weather bureau said amihan continues to affect Northern Luzon, while the shear line is producing rain over Central Luzon.

“Amihan ang nakakaapekto dito sa Northern Luzon (The northeast monsoon is affecting Northern Luzon),” the weather specialist reported.

“Habang shear line; ito ’yung banggaan po ng malamig na hangin mula sa amihan at ’yung mainit na hangin mula sa Karagatang Pasipiko na nagdudulot po ng mga pag-ulan partikular na nga dito sa may bahagi ng Central Luzon, in particular po ang lalawigan ng Aurora (The shear line — the collision of cold amihan winds and warm Pacific winds — is bringing rains over Central Luzon, particularly Aurora).”

The ITCZ, meanwhile, will continue to bring cloudiness and rain over Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao, the agency said.

“Ito po ’yung pagsasalubong ng hangin mula sa magkaibang hemispheres mula sa northern and southern hemispheres kaya po may mga kaulapan partikular na sa may bahagi ng Palawan, Visayas, at Mindanao (This system brings together winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, producing cloudiness over Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao),” he said.

Badrina added that the likelihood of continued rains remains high over Mindanao and Aurora.

“Mas malaki nga ang mga posibilidad ng mga pag-ulan sa bahaging ito ng ating bansa (There is a higher chance of rains over these parts of the country),” he said. 

“Malaki rin ang posibilidad ng pag-ulan sa Aurora dulot ng shear line habang mahihinang pag-ulan at minsan ay mga katamtaman na pag-ulan sa may bahagi naman ng Northern Luzon (Rains are also likely in Aurora due to the shear line, while Northern Luzon may experience light to sometimes moderate rains).”

For Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, PAGASA said residents may expect a warm midday but should still prepare for isolated thunderstorms later in the day.

“Makakaranas naman ngayong araw ng medyo mainit na tanghali pero may posibilidad pa rin ng mga isolated na pag-ulan, pagkulog, pagkidlat sa hapon hanggang sa gabi (It will be warm by midday, but isolated rains, thunder, and lightning remain possible from afternoon until evening).”
