San Beda held its ground and completed a vengeful 65-56 win over Jose Rizal University to inch closer to a quarterfinal bonus in the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Arena in San Juan City Saturday, Nov. 15.
Coming in inspired to avenge their painful 67-66 loss to the very same team in the first round, the Red Lions drew strength from Janti Miller who drained two crucial triples that defused a late Heavy Bombers rally en route to their eighth win against three losses for the No. 1 spot in Group B.
Meanwhile, JRU fell to fourth place with a 6-6 card.
Aside from marking its back-to-back wins, San Beda also strengthened its bid for a twice-to-beat advantage that would be useful in their bracket which was tagged as “Group of Death.”
“I took a little step back in this game because I’ve been sick all week so this is like a first game back for me,” Miller explained.
“At the last second, the ball came to me and I just had to put the game away, that’s the only thing on my mind,” he added.
Miller shone the brightest with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Bryan Sajonia tospcored with 18.
Shawn Argente and Allen Laurenaria steered JRU with 12 points apiece, while Harry Herrera added 10 points, but it all went for naught.
Up next for San Beda is Emilio Aguinaldo College on Wednesday, Nov. 19, while JRU tries to close out its elimination run with a win against College of Saint Benilde Tuesday, Nov. 18.
