HSBC Philippines has teamed up with the local unit of multinational consumer goods giant Unilever, offering better financing packages for the company’s suppliers as part of the bank’s push for a sustainable supply chain.
“Through HSBC’s Sustainable Supply Chain Finance, Unilever Philippines’ suppliers can apply for improved financing from HSBC Philippines based on their sustainability ratings,” the British banking giant said in a Nov. 14 statement.
According to HSBC, the program offers supply chain financing with additional incentives to reduce costs while helping clients meet sustainability goals and “transition to more sustainable operations.”
HSBC Philippines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sandeep Uppal said multinational companies’ procurement standards strongly drive sustainability, hence the bank’s partnership with Unilever Philippines.
Uppal explained that in many industries, a company’s supply chain—not the company itself—accounts for most environmental impact. As such, the bank’s program encourages sustainable operations across Unilever’s supply chain.
HSBC is collaborating with “larger suppliers to drive progress in shared supply chains through scaled initiatives and to support suppliers at an earlier stage of emissions reduction with education and incentivization.”
Rodrigo Rivero, finance lead at Unilever’s beauty and wellbeing Greater Asia and head of finance at Unilever Philippines, said partnerships with financial firms help suppliers thrive while advancing the company’s sustainability goals across climate, nature, plastics, and livelihoods.
HSBC aims to provide $750 billion to $1 trillion in sustainable financing in a bid to meet the collective goal of decarbonization and sustainability.
