Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province mourned the death of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Thursday.
“Rest in peace, Sir Juan Ponce Enrile, our Chief Presidential Legal Counsel,” Mayor Maila Ting said in a Facebook post.
Ting credited the creation of the Cagayan State University to Enrile.
“He crafted the charter for the establishment of state universities, and by virtue of Presidential Decree 1436 signed by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos on June 11, 1978, Cagayan State University was born,” Ting said.
Ting added that Enrile was also instrumental in designating Tuguegarao City as the regional government center of the Cagayan Valley region.
“Indeed, he is a Cagayano who has done many great things for Cagayan. Our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the Enrile family, especially to Ma’am Katrina. May you find comfort and strength during this difficult time,” Ting said.
Enrile was born in Gonzaga, Cagayan, north of Tuguegarao, in 1924.
Gonzaga also mourned the death of Enrile and condoled with his family.
