PNP commits support as ICI seeks assistance for flood control, other infra project validation

Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., acting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), vowed to fully support the ongoing investigation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) which earlier seek assistance for the expansion of the probe into all anomalous infrastructure projects.
Out of the 421 identified questionable projects, the ICI is currently focusing on 80 projects that are linked to the 15 contractors identified by President Marcos to have bagged at least P100 billion fund for flood control in the past three years.
“The PNP’s duty extends beyond law enforcement. It is also a responsibility to uphold the truth and protect the public trust,” said Nartatez, who was present during the High Command Conference held on Nov. 12 at Camp Crame, Quezon City.
“It is our duty to ensure that every investigation is conducted with integrity and fairness. We will not yield to any influence or compromise because every step we take must be guided by honesty, accountability, and justice for the Filipino people,” he added.
Aside from Nartatez and ICI members, also present were Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Romeo Brawner, Jr, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon and ranking officials of the Department of Justice and National Bureau of Investigation.
The meeting was intended to get all the assistance needed to expedite the investigation, including the expansion of the coverage of the investigation to include as many anomalous infrastructure projects.
The police and military assistance needed will focus on inspection and validation of all the suspected questionable infrastructure projects.
Nartatez emphasized the important participation of the PNP in the investigation as he assured that the police will provide intelligence, forensic, and investigative support to strengthen the government’s case against corruption.
“The PNP is not just an enforcement agency. It is a partner in building a nation founded on accountability and truth. Our men and women are dedicated to ensuring that no wrongdoing escapes the reach of justice,” he said.
Dizon, for his part, commended the close coordination among agencies, noting that inspection teams composed of engineers, lawyers, and technical experts will be deployed nationwide to verify the legitimacy of infrastructure projects.
“The goal is to coordinate and validate our current list and the purpose is also to expand the coverage because there are a lot of projects that need to be checked across the country,” said Dizon.
“We need to check all these and among those discussed was how these inspections and validation could be done in the fastest way,” he added.
Dizon said at least 40 individuals may spend their time in jail as early as November this year as the ICI is set to file non-bailable cases against those involved in the multi-billion peso flood control anomalies.
