The late Juan Ponce Enrile (MANILA BULLETIN)
The flag in front of the Department of National Defense at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City will be flown at half-mast in honor of its former minister, former senator and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile.
In a statement, the DND described Enrile as an icon in defense policy and strategy, and played a foundational role in building the modern Department of National Defense.
Enrile was first reported to have been taken to the intensive care unit of a hospital over pneumonia.
On Thursday, his daughter Katrina announced the death of Enrile. He was 101.
“The Department of National Defense joins the nation in mourning the passing of the longest serving Secretary/Minister of National Defense, Senate President, and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile,” the DND statement read.
“His long and storied career in public service marked profound changes in our nation’s history. His legacy in our country’s politics and governance will always be remembered,” it added.
Enrile served as a Defense minister of President Marcos’ father.
“The Department extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We pay tribute to his years of service to the Filipino people and his commitment to the defense and sovereignty of the Republic,” the DND said.
