'Uwan' continues to bring rains, gusty winds over parts of Northern Luzon — PAGASA
Metro Manila, other areas expected to see improved weather
Severe Tropical Storm Uwan (Fung-wong) continues to bring rains and gusty winds over parts of Northern Luzon, even as the storm’s center is already outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
The storm was located 280 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.
It was moving north-northeastward at 10 kph.
According to PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin de la Cruz-Galicia, parts of Uwan’s circulation continue to affect the northwestern portion of Northern Luzon.
Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan Islands (Calayan, Dalupiri, Fuga), and the northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte (Burgos, Bangui, Pasuquin, Dumalneg, Pagudpud).
A gale warning is also in effect over the northern and western seaboards of Northern Luzon.
Dela Cruz-Galicia said Uwan is expected to move generally northeastward and may re-enter the PAR Wednesday morning or afternoon before making landfall over southwestern Taiwan by afternoon or evening.
The storm is expected to weaken into a tropical storm prior to landfall and will likely continue weakening into a remnant low by Friday, Nov. 14, due to interaction with Taiwan’s landmass and unfavorable environmental conditions.
She said the storm’s trough or extension is also bringing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Ilocos Region.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and other parts of the country are expected to experience improved conditions, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, de la Cruz-Galicia added.
PAGASA warned the public to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides, particularly during moderate to heavy rainfall or severe thunderstorms.
