UST arrests four-game slide at UE's expense

University of Santo Tomas rode a well-rounded attack to arrest its four-game slide at the expense of University of the East, 109-97, and strengthen its bid for a semifinal spot in the UAAP Season 88 men's basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Despite briefly losing their steam in the third, the Growling Tigers showed composure with Nic Cabañero draining timely baskets to shrug off a late Red Warriors rally led by Dylan Despi.
From an 82-55 deficit, UE came too close for comfort as Despi engineered a massive run that made it a nine-point game, 83-92, in the fourth before Cabañero, Amiel Acido, Mark Llemit, and Collins Akowe countered with an 8-0 attack to pull away for good.
It was a bounce back win for UST which also tightened its grip of a Final Four slot with a 6-5 record.
UE, meanwhile, stayed winless in 12 matches.
The Pido Jarencio-mentored crew also blanked UE in all of their matchups this year as it previously scored a 111-99 triumph last Oct. 4 at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.
Cabañero starred for UST after collecting 19 points, five rebounds, three steals, and one block, while Akowe had a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds with one assist and one block.
"The veterans are always there to remind me that I do my thing, just need to focus on the little things in the game, no pressure," said Akowe, who produced another double-double outing.
"The coaches are always there to support us and say that we must keep playing. Basically, I just doing my job, and I'm grateful for the support of everyone, even on online" he added.
Gelo Crisostomo finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one block. Forthsky Padrigao and Acido added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Wello Lingolingo topscored for UE as he unloaded 18 points, while Despi and Precious Momowei scored 17 each. Drew Jimenez and Toper Lagat chipped in 15 and 13 points which all went for naught.
The España-based squad faces Ateneo (5-5) this Saturday, Nov. 15, while UE tangles with league leader National University (9-2). Both games are set at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
