CALASIAO, Pangasinan – Businessmen suffered losses as super typhoon “Uwan” battered this province this week.
Hundreds of mango trees toppled here, San Carlos City, and nearby municipalities.
As a result, mangoes due for harvest in the last week of November are now being sold for as low as P10.
Vendor Juvelyn de Guzman, 52, of Buenlag, this town, sold mangoes at the public market here after the typhoon struck.
De Guzman said her boss had mango trees damaged by the typhoon and they gathered fruits that totaled 200 baskets.
"Napilitan na kami mamulot at ilagay sa halos 200 kaing matapos na ito malaglag dulot ng bagyong Uwan,”she said.

De Guzman said they were expecting to sell these for P150 to P180 per kilo but due to Uwan, the price has plummeted to P10 per kilo.
“Malaking lugi ng boss namin at hindi na niya mapakinabangan ng ibang puno at natumba na rin maliban sa nalaglag lahat ng bunga ng mangga dulot ng bagyo,” she said.

Lito Ballesteros of Malabago, Calasiao, said his friend’s mango trees in Bolinao, San Carlos, Lingayen, and nearby towns were also destroyed.
Ballesteros said the windfall his friend was expecting in December is gone.
“Nasayang ang pinaghirapan niya at gastos niya na halos P1.5 milyon sa pag-spray at pagbabalot sa bunga ng manga."

Mangoes were sold at P20 early Tuesday morning and went down to P10 in the afternoon.
