Eala to join elite field in December's Macau Masters

Days after Christmas, the country’s top netter Alex Eala hopes to give Filipinos another reason to celebrate as she returns to action in the 2025 Macau Tennis Masters set on Dec. 27 to 28.
Eala, 20, was named one of the participants in the two-day invitational meet that will also feature fellow rising star Mirra Andreeva of Russia, along with retired greats Li Na of China and Spain’s Conchita Martinez, who are both Grand Slam champions.
“Game on. The 2025 MGM Macau Tennis Masters is officially in play,” the tournament wrote on a social media post.
“This year, we’re bringing the energy of Play. Celebrate. Repeat. — and shine the spotlight on Women’s Power,” it added.
ATP bets are also participating with Czech Jakub Menšík, Chinese Shang Juncheng, and English Jack Draper also in the list.
Prior to her Macau stint, the 5-foot-9 Eala is anticipated to don the national colors in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand slated Dec. 9 to 20.
If everything falls into place, this would be the best comeback for Eala who once won three bronze medals in the 2021 Vietnam edition of the biennial meet.
A few weeks ago, the Filipina lefty reached her career-best ranking of No. 50 – a giant leap after being ranked only at No. 158 earlier this year – following her run in the Hong Kong Tennis Open.
There, Eala advanced to the second round where she was bested by eventual champion Canadian Victoria Mboko, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Before wrapping up her WTA Tour this year, Eala made a historic triumph for the Nationals after ruling the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico to bag her first-ever WTA 125 crown. Though she had already been impressive earlier this year thanks to unforgettable campaigns in the WTA1000 Miami Open and WTA 250 Eastbourne Open.
