Cotabato town mayor donates one-month paycheck for calamity-hit Cebu
SACDALAN
DAVAO CITY – The mayor of the municipality of Midsayap in Cotabato province is donating his one-month salary for calamity-hit areas in Cebu province.
Mayor Rolly Sacdalan donated his paycheck as the local government conducted a donation drive among local government workers for Cebu and the town is gearing up for its 89th foundation anniversary on Nov. 25.
“While Midsayap is celebrating its 89th foundation anniversary and the 21st Sinugba Festival, we also sympathize and in solidarity with our fellow Filipinos who are now in difficult situation,” Sacdalan said.
As a gesture of leadership, the mayor said that he is donating his one-month salary for calamity-hit communities.
The mayor of a first-class town like Midsayap has a salary of at least P142,000 a month or Salary Grade 27.
Sacdalan appealed to the private sector and the local business community to take part in the relief donation drive.
“Alam nating may sarili rin tayong pinagdadaanan dito sa Midsayap, ngunit alam din nating ang pagtulong ay bahagi na ng ating pagkatao,” Sacdalan appealed.
(We are also going through in Midsayap but helping others is part of our personality)
On Nov. 11, Sacdalan issued a memorandum
for all local government employees encouraging them to extend voluntary assistance for calamity-affected communities.
“Let us uphold the spirit of ‘bayanihan’ (cooperation) by participating in a ‘Pass-the-Hat’ donation drive, where each employee may give any amount within their means,” Sacdalan said.
He added that donations will be turned over to local government units in Cebu recently devasted by typhoon “Tino.”
“Your act of kindness and generosity, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping our ‘kababayans’ recover from this tragedy,” the mayor added.
Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office head Karl Ballentes said his office has so far collected at least P10,000.
Ballentes added that the amount mostly came from the bonuses of fellow MSWDO workers.
He added that local government will consolidate the donations until Friday, Nov. 14.
Sacdalan emphasized that amount of donation does not matter for as long as it is wholeheartedly given.
“Mga kababayan, maaaring malakas ang bagyo, at malaki ang pinsalang iniwan nito, ngunit mas malakas ang isang bansang nagmamahalan at nagtutulungan,” the mayor concluded.
(The people of a country that is helping each other is stronger than a typhoon)
