CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – Authorities seized almost a ton of hot meat in this city on Tuesday night.
A driver is facing criminal charges for transporting the contraband weighing 763 kilos and worth P350,000 from Batangas to this city in a jeepney.
Police said a jeepney with license plates DJW-310 was flagged down by the Provincial Veterinary Quarantine in a checkpoint inside the pier.
Veterinary checkers noticed traces of blood dripping from the jeepney to the pavement.
They approached the jeepney and smelled something rotten inside the boxes placed in between other goods.
They opened 24 boxes and found pork skinless legs inside weighing approximately 481.89 kilos, 240 kilos of intestine and flower fats, 11 kilos of packed chicken, and 30 kilos of ground pork.
The 62-year-old driver from this province told investigators that the boxes containing the illegal meat were brought to Divisoria in Manila through a popular courier service where he picked them up to bring to a meat store here.
The PVQ said the confiscated meat will be buried in a vacant lot in Barangay Guinobatan in accordance with Department of Agriculture disposal methods.
