CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – The Department of Social Welfare and Development 4-A has distributed assistance totaling P4.25 million to people affected by typhoon “Uwan” in the Calabarzon region of Nov. 10.
Evacuees received 6,420 family food packs and stranded passengers received 489 ready-to-eat meals.
The DSWD said 71,691 families in the region were affected by the typhoon. About 65,000 of them are temporarily staying in 2,364 evacuation centers.
The agency continues to support local governments in ensuring safety, assessing the situation, and providing appropriate assistance to evacuees.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard said LCT Felicity 8, a landing craft tank operated by Silver Sand Shipping Corp., ran aground in the sea of Barangay Wawa Ibaba, Lemery Batangas due to Uwan.
Adverse sea conditions caused it to drift towards shallow waters, resulting in the grounding, the PCG said.
An inspection by the PCG found out that LCT Felicity 8 was found stable with no significant structural damage, and all crew members were confirmed to be safe and in good physical condition.
No oil spill or marine pollution was observed.
The vessel’s operating company was ordered to mobilize tugboat assistance and facilitate a safe towing operation while maintaining close coordination with the local government unit and relevant response agencies to ensure an orderly and secure recovery effort.
The PCG will conduct a marine casualty investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the grounding and assess compliance with safety and navigational protocols.
A woman suffering from depression and mental illness drowned at the height of Uwan Sunday in Padre Garcia, Batangas.
Police said the victim was found Monday at 8 a.m.
Investigation said the victim left her house without the knowledge of her family.
Police searched and found the victim in a water-filled vacant lot owned by a relative.
The victim’s mother refused an autopsy, believing that her daughter drowned due to her condition.
