'Dreams' ang title ng concert dahil ito yung mga dream songs ko na matagal ko ng gustong kantahin. Sa mga previous concerts ko lagi kaming may mga concept. Like 'Courage' earlier this year. But this time, the repertoire is limitless. Meron from musicals, OPM, and current hits. (The title of the concert is 'Dreams' because these are my dream songs that I've been wanting to sing for a long time. In my previous concerts, we always had concepts. Like 'Courage' earlier this year. So the songs I'm singing are pretty limited. But this time, the repertoire is limitless. There are from musicals, OPM, and current hits)," said Gerald during the recent media conference for his upcoming concert held in Quezon City.
Gerald added, "Challenging ito because first time kong kakantahin ang mga songs na ito sa concert. I want to be out of my comfort zone this time. (This is challenging because it's my first time singing these songs in concert. I want to be out of my comfort zone this time.)"
The "Dreams" concert will feature guests such as Marco Sison, Na Young Jeon, Jed Madela, and Jona.
Fresh from New York
The 34-year-old singer has just arrived from a vacation in New York, where he visited his girlfriend, who works there.
"Very chill ang US vacation ko. I was with my girlfriend. I was happy being there. Naging second home ko na ang New York. Pero matagal pa siguro. (My US vacation was very chill. I was with my girlfriend. I was happy being there. New York has become my second home. But it might be a while yet.)"
"We went around New York. It was peaceful. Walang time manood ng Broadway play kasi may work si girlfriend. (No time to watch a Broadway play because my girlfriend has work.) I am a yes man in New York. But she will try to watch my concert here," said Gerald.
Asked if there were plans to settle down soon, Gerald answered, "Hindi ko masabi kung kailan. Like this year, nakatatlong concert na ako: noong January yung 'Courage.' July naman yung 'Gives Back' and then itong 'Dreams.' Nagkataon maraming projects, so I want to strike while the iron is hot. Yun muna ang principle ko. But right now ginagawa ko yung family house ko at yung family house namin. So marami pang kailangan ma-settle. Maybe soon. Yung dreams ko para sa family ko malapit ng matupad like yung magagawa na yung bahay sa Navotas. Patapos na. I want them to be comfortable. (I can't say when. Like this year, I've already had three concerts: in January, 'Courage.' In July, 'Gives Back' and then this 'Dreams.' There are numerous projects, so I want to strike while the iron is hot. That's my principle. However, I'm currently building our family house. There is still a lot that needs to be settled. Maybe soon. My dreams for my family are about to come true, like the house in Navotas is almost done. It's almost over. I want them to be comfortable.)"
Legacy
Gerald expressed gratitude for remaining active in the entertainment industry. He hopes to create more hit songs and appear in iconic films.
"I'm grateful and thankful na nakarating ako kung nasaan man ako ngayon. I'm happy and content with my career and my life.
"Gusto ko pang nagkaroon ng many hit songs at mag-iwan ng legacy. Mga songs na kahit matanda na ako ay kakantahin pa rin ng new generation ang songs ko. (I want to have many hit songs and leave a legacy. Songs that even when I'm old, the new generation will still sing my songs.)"
"Since I am into acting, I want to have a legacy film. Yung tipong relevant siya at babalikan para panoorin. Sa personal naman, papunta na rin ako sa age na pwede na akong magka-family. But I guess there's still more that I can offer sa mga tao. Gusto ko pang ma-showcase ang talent ko sa music and acting. (Since I am into acting, I want to have a legacy film. The kind that is relevant and will be watched again. Personally, I am also approaching the age where I can start a family. But I guess there's still more that I can offer to people. I want to showcase my talent in music and acting)." he added.
Regarding music adjustments, Gerald admitted that he had tried several times to make it sound more pop. "Pero siguro kulang lang sa promo. Pero kung may matatanggap ako na mga pang Gen Z, I'm willing to sing it and adjust or even evolve as an artist. Dapat constant ang evolution ng isang artist. Dapat may reinvention ang artist. (But maybe it's just lacking in promo. But if I can get something acceptable to Gen Z, I'm willing to sing it and adjust or even evolve as an artist. An artist's evolution should be constant. An artist should have reinvention.)"
'Les Miserables'
Gerald said he loves musicals, recalling the auditions he made for "Les Misérables" for the West End.
"When I was in the UK, I auditioned for 'Les Misérables.' After completing my two-year contract, pinakanta muna nila ako roon ng 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' for the role of Marius (Pontmercy). They liked it. Sabi nila we'll talk to you later. I needed to go home because my visa was about to expire.
"Noong nasa Pilipinas na ako, sila ang nag-ask sa akin na send more videos ng mga materials ni Marius. They liked it. Dumating na yung point na gusto na nila ako papuntahin uli sa London for the final audition. Then the pandemic came. (When I was in the Philippines, they were the ones who asked me to send more videos of Marius' materials. They liked it. It got to the point where they wanted me to go to London again for the final audition. Then the pandemic came.)"
"May 2019 natapos yung contract ko. Nakagawa pa ako ng 'Sweeney Todd' sa Manila in November. Then March 2020 yung pandemic eh. So hindi na natuloy. Sayang. I was really hoping. Dream role ko yung role na Marius. It will be in London. Maybe sometime. Hindi pa siguro ngayon yung time. (My contract ended in May 2019. I was able to do 'Sweeney Todd' in Manila in November. Then the pandemic happened in March 2020. So it didn't continue. Too bad. I was really hoping for the role of Marius. It was a dream role, and it would be staged in London. Maybe next time)," Gerald added.
