Damage to agriculture in Negros Occidental from storm nears P100 M
NEGROS Occidental sustained almost P100 million in damage to agriculture, fisheries, and livestock from typhoon ‘Tino.’ (Moises Padilla LGU)
BACOLOD CITY – Damage to agriculture, fisheries, and livestock due to typhoon “Tino” in the province of Negros Occidental is almost P100 million.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported that Negros Occidental incurred P99,136,528.37 in damage – P72.5 million in agriculture, fisheries at P22.5 million, and livestock at P4 million.
Almost 3,000 rice farmers in 168 barangays in 22 local government units (LGUs) were affected, covering 2.3 hectares, losing P68.2 million.
Sixty-three corn farmers were affected in nine barangays in five LGUs, covering 31.29 hectares, losing P1 million.
Sixty-two high-value crop farmers were affected in six villages in two LGUs, losing P3.2 million.
Almost 500 fisherfolk were affected, and 141 households lost 5,596 livestock animals in 32 barangays in 11 LGUs.
The province was severely hit by Tino, prompting the government to declare a state of calamity.
