POLICE recover the remains of a farmer who was buried alive in a landslide during the onslaught of super typhoon ‘Uwan’ in Tinoc, Ifugao on Nov. 9.
BAGUIO CITY – Sixteen people were killed and two are missing in landslides triggered by super typhoon “Uwan” in the Cordillera region.
The Barlig, Mountain Province Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that a father and son died while another son was injured in Sitio Paranchoy, Barangay Latang, Barlig, at 6 a.m. on Nov. 10.
The victim, a 57-year-old man, was declared dead on arrival at the Barlig District Hospital while his 24-year-old son died before reaching the Bontoc General Hospital in Bontoc, Mountain Province. His other son, a 22-year-old man, is recovering.
Three people were killed in Lubuagan, Kalinga province and two others are missing – Redento Tino and Ricardo Magwin.
Ifugao has eight fatalities. Two were killed at the Batad Rice Terraces in Banaue, after a large portion of the trail and terrace walls collapsed. Another was a farmer who remained in his plantation during the storm but was buried alive in his hut in Tinoc on Nov. 9.
Benguet Gov. Melchor Diclas reported that three people were killed on Nov. 10, two in the town of Buguias and one in Kabayan.
Authorities urged people to evacuate landslide-prone areas as rains and winds continue to be experienced in the Cordillera region.
