University of the East faces another major problem in its already forgettable UAAP Season 88 campaign as team captain John Abate announced an abrupt end to his collegiate career after suffering a nose injury recently.
The 24-year-old Abate, whose father is former PBA player John Arigo, fractured his nose after an accidental collision with teammate Precious Momowei in their 78-74 loss to Ateneo last week.
The talented two-way guard showed promise despite UE's current 0-11 record as he averaged 16.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 10 matches.
“A warrior is taught to persevere, to fight even when the odds are against him, and to honor the place he calls home. My journey with UE may have been short, but has left a mark on me that I’ll carry for life,” said Abate.
“I hope that through my time here, you’ve seen not just the player, but the person I’ve matured into, one built on pride, grit, and love for this family and the game. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for EVERYTHING,” he added.
The 6-foot-1 playmaker also expressed his gratitude to the whole UE community as well to his coaches and teammates for their support.
“To the entire UE community, my teammates, and everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you for the love and support through every high and low,” Abate continued.
“It’s been an honor to wear the red and white and to fight beside my brothers. No matter where life takes me next, a part of my heart will always belong to this family,” he concluded.
Before joining the Red Warriors, Abate played for Spring Hill College in the United States before returning to the country for a brief stint with the University of Santo Tomas two years ago.
With his departure, Momowei and Wello Lingolingo are expected to carry the load as they aim to win their first game this season.
UE is eliminated from the semifinal contention with three assignments left in its calendar.
