Palace on Cebu mayors' foreign trip during typhoon Tino: Let's see how they'll explain

Malacañang said local executives, who were abroad during the onslaught of Typhoon Tino, will have to explain the purpose of their travel.
Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the local chief executives' overseas travel will have to be assessed first before President Marcos takes action about it.
She said they must first wait for the mayors to explain their trip abroad, which took place while their respective areas were reeling from the impact of a deadly typhoon.
"Tingnan po natin at kung paano sila mag-explain na despite that na memorandum ay sila po ay umalis ng bansa (Let’s see how they will explain why, despite the memorandum, they still left the country)," Castro said in a Palace briefing on Monday, Nov. 10.
The Palace official also said that it must be determined whether their foreign trip had an effect on the way they carried out response and assistance to the victims of the typhoon, which has since claimed more than 200 lives.
"Unang-una po ay kailangan muna itong ma-assess—ano ba talaga ang kanilang pakay papunta sa ibang bansa at kung ito po ba talaga ay nakaaapekto sa mabilisang pag-aksyon para sa mga kababayan natin na nakaranas ng hagupit ng bagyo (First of all, this needs to be assessed—what was really their purpose in going abroad, and whether it truly affected the immediate response to our fellow citizens who were struck by the typhoon)," Castro said.
"At hindi po natin agad-agad ito masasabi na sila ay may sala na kailangan po pag-aralan muna (We cannot immediately conclude that they are at fault; this matter must first be carefully studied)," she added.
Seven mayors and one Sanguniang Panlalawigan member in Cebu traveled to the United Kingdom early this month, according to a document issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
