Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto expressed his gratitude to the city's residents and emergency responders for their efforts in ensuring everyone's safety from the adverse effects of Super Typhoon Uwan, which battered the entire Luzon region, including Metro Manila on Sunday, Nov. 9.
"Salamat at hindi ganun kasama ang panahon sa atin kagabi, ngunit nananatili tayong alerto. As per the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), we are still under TCWS Signal No. 2 (I am grateful that the weather last night was not as bad as we've anticipated, but we still remain on alert. As per PAGASA, we are still under TCWS Signal No. 2)," Sotto said.
He added that Metro Manila is still under yellow heavy rainfall warning, citing the weather bureau's 8 a.m. bulletin.
He also thanked Pasigueños who have opted to evacuate early even before the typhoon struck.
"Salamat sa 901 pamilya na lumikas kahapon (pre-emptive evacuation) mula sa mga lugar na binabaha kapag tumataas ang Ilog Marikina. Hindi man tuluyang bumaha ay tama po ang ginawa ninyo. Tandaan natin na ang weather forecast ay hindi perpekto. Mas mabuti na 'yung lumikas tayo at wala naman nangyari kaysa biglang kailanganin nating lumikas habang bumabagyo (Thank you to the 901 families who evacuated yesterday from areas that usually flood when the Marikina River rises. Even though flooding didn't occur, what you did was right. Let's remember that weather forecast aren't perfect. It's better to evacuate and have nothing happen than to be forced to evacuate suddenly during a storm)," the mayor said.
"Salamat din sa mga Team However at Team 24H. May God bless you for your hard work and sacrifices as you serve our city (Thank you also to Team However and Team 24H. May God bless you for your hard work and sacrifices as you serve our city)," he noted.
According to the local chief executive, the city government does not send out rescuers during the height of a typhoon to ensure the safety of rescuers and emergency responders as well.
"As per Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) protocol, we do not send out rescuers at the height of a typhoon, if winds and rains are very strong. We have to protect the lives of our rescuers as well," Sotto stressed.
In its 9 a.m. situation report on Nov. 10, the city government said 865 families equivalent to 3,203 individuals remained at Pasig's 24 evacuation centers across its 17 barangays.
"Mag-ingat po ang lahat at patuloy na mag-monitor ng lagay ng panahon. Para sa emergencies, tumawag sa Pasig City Emergency Hotline: 8643-0000 (Everyone, please be careful and continue to monitor the weather conditions. For emergencies, call the Pasig City Emergency Hotline: 8643-0000)," the mayor said.
