IV Of Spades: 'Fan kami ng work ng isa't-isa'
Ending their five-year hiatus, IV Of Spades gave their fans an early Christmas gift releasing their comeback album, "Andalucia."
According to the band, the album tackles love, yearning, and mental health.
They maintained that it is the culmination of their experimental phase.
During the exclusive listening party and press conference last Nov. 4, the band shared with us insights on their new sound.
"Nag-change talaga yung dynamics namin dahil nakapag-explore na kami individually. Parang wala na yung urge to make a mark individually. So kung gagawa kami ng something, talagang genuine yung idea," Blaster Silonga said.
(Our dynamics really changed because we were able to explore individually. The urge to make a mark individually is gone. So if we do something, the idea is really genuine)
Meanwhile, Zild Benitez related how it is easier for them to work together now because they are fans of each other's works.
"Akala ko nung una mahihirapan kasi dahil nga sa ego namin pero hindi. Mas malakas yung mutual respect namin and fan kami ng work ng isa't-isa," Zild said.
(I thought at first it would be difficult because of our egos, but it wasn't. Mutual respect is now stronger and we are fans of each other's work)
In making "Andalucia," IV Of Spades approached production grounded in authenticity.
“We wanted a sound that we could play live,” they shared. “The production is ambitious, so we started by jamming the songs before recording them.”
After years apart, the band found its chemistry intact, perhaps stronger than ever.
Moments of simplicity reminded them why they started making music together in the first place.
“What truly matters are the small things like eating together, or whoever’s late buys the coffee. Sometimes we’d turn off the aircon, so we’d all be sweating while recording,” said Zild.
Co-produced by Brian Lotho and Emil Dela Rosa, "Andalucia" features twelve tracks that traverse genres and emotions while maintaining the band’s penchant for introspection and subtle sonic experiments.
Leading the record is the explosive “Monster,” a vibrant yet gritty rock anthem that fuses retro influences with modern edge.
Other highlights include “Aura,” the first song the band wrote together after reuniting; “Nanaman,” featuring Blaster Silonga on vocals; “Suliranin,” an escapist anthem that invites listeners to leave their worries behind and eventually lose themselves; and “Konsensya,” a crossover tune with ‘90s alt, indie, and Britpop influences.
The band is set to perform "Andalucia" in a sold-out December 12 concert at the Mall of Asia Arena as presented by Karpos Multimedia.
Fans eager to join in on the fun can buy tickets for December 13.
