LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – The Bicol region was pounded by super typhoon "Uwan" on Sunday, leaving widespread flooding, power outages, and damage in several provinces.
Catanduanes, where signal No. 4 was raised by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, bore the brunt of the tropical cyclone.
Residents reported intense winds and torrential rains that submerged several communities.
In Albay, multiple towns were inundated by floodwaters.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned communities around Mayon Volcano of possible lahar triggered by continuous rains.
Legazpi City led by Mayor Hisham Ismail has started clearing operations along with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Albay 2nd Engineering District under District Engineer Warren Azotea, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Police Regional Office-5, and other government agencies.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Bicol spokesperson Gremil Naz said that 181,855 families or 652,768 persons in 2,047 barangays in the Bicol have been affected by Uwan. He said that 115,664 families or 400,684 persons are staying in evacuation centers.
One person was injured in Catanduanes where a 51-year-old man from Barangay Batalay, Bato, fell from the roof of his house while securing it ahead of the storm. “The individual was immediately brought to the Eastern Bicol Medical Center (EBMC) for treatment,” Naz said.
Power outages were reported in Albay and Catanduanes. Assessment and relief operations continue in affected areas.
Authorities reminded residents to remain vigilant as after-effects such as flooding, landslides, and lahar flow remain possible even after the typhoon has exited the region.
The OCD-Bicol reported on Sunday night that one person was killed in Catanduanes by Uwan. Naz said that the 48-year-old male victim drowned in San Jose Poblacion, Viga town.
"One 48-year-old male individual from San Jose Poblacion, Viga, Catanduanes was reported to have drowned last Nov. 9, 2025. Said person returned to check on his livestock during the onslaught of TC Uwan but was swept away by flash floods," Naz said.
Several government infrastructure were damaged by the typhoon. Naz added that at least 46 roads in Bicol are impassable due to flooding or damage.
