Super Typhoon 'Uwan' claims first fatality in Catanduanes
One person was killed in Catanduanes due to Super Typhoon “Uwan,” the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Sunday evening, Nov. 9.
OCD Asst. Sec. Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said the lone fatality was recorded in Viga, Catanduanes and the victim was swept away by a flashflood.
“Region 5 already reported one casualty but this is for validation due to flashflood or drowning,” he said in a press briefing.
Two persons were also hurt in Bicol (Region 5): one in Catanduanes and another in Calinog, Iloilo, according to Alejandro.
“Uwan’s eye is currently just above Catanduanes area but the impact of this typhoon is already strongly felt in Regions 5 and 8 (Eastern Visayas). We are appealing to our leaders in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Northern Luzon to complete their preemptive evacuations because the storm is coming, bringing heavy rain and strong winds,” he said.
Bernardo said among the hazards being monitored were storm surge, flooding, and landslides in high-risk areas.
As of 4 p.m., a total of 1,179,086 individuals or 344,413 families were already preemptively evacuated in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Bicol, Western Visayas (Region 6), Negros Island Region (NIR), Central Visayas (Region 7), and Eastern Visayas.
“In Region 5, they are currently experiencing strong winds with moderate to heavy rains,” Alejandro said. “All provinces have no power except Sorsogon.”
Meanwhile, several areas in Bicol Region have also reported intermittent communication lines as well as flooding.
