BACOLOD CITY – Search and retrieval operations for the five remaining missing individuals due to typhoon “Tino” in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental province was put on hold on Sunday, Nov. 9, as super typhoon “Uwan” approached.
Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police spokesperson, said that 20 fatalities have been reported in the city.
The most recent fatality was a 14-year-old girl and her decomposing body was found in Isabela, Negros Occidental on Sunday morning.
The fatalities were killed by flashflood from Kanlaon Volcano during the height of Tino on Nov. 4.
Polinar said responders had difficulty continuing search and retrieval operations because of heavy rains from Uwan.
“We’re continuing our monitoring for a possible escalation. But, hoping it won’t escalate,” Polinar said.
Canlaon City is under a state of calamity as a result of the June 2024 Kanlaon eruption and Tino.
One fatality was also reported in the town of Vallehermoso, bringing the total number of Tino victims to 21 in Negros Oriental.
