Employing one of the lessons learned during the harrowing "Yolanda" tragedy 12 years ago, Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez ordered the prepositioning of relief goods for his district, the entire province, and other parts of Eastern Visayas ahead of Typhoon "Uwan's" expected arrival.
“We have learned from the painful lessons of Yolanda,” Romualdez said in a statement Saturday, Nov. 8, on the 12th year anniversary of the super typhoon's devastation of Leyte and nearby provinces.
“That is why we are ensuring that relief goods are ready and strategically positioned ahead of time so we can respond immediately to our people’s needs," said the former House Speaker.
The prepositioning of the relief goods was a joint effort between the offices of Romualdez and Leyte-based Tingog Party-list.
“The relief goods are prepositioned here at the Tingog Community Center,” Romualdez said.
Within the community center in Tacloban City, volunteers and staff worked round the clock repacking food packs and essential commodities for immediate deployment to communities expected to be hardest hit by the approaching storm.
Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre said among the prepositioned items were 400 sacks of 25-kilo rice, 80 boxes each of coffee, noodles, and canned goods, 50 boxes of Energen cereal drink, and 50 boxes of assorted biscuits.
He said the items were ready for swift distribution to affected families once Uwan makes landfall.
“Where these will be delivered will depend on which municipalities will be affected by the typhoon, in coordination with the Office of Civil Defense and our local government units,” Acidre said.
Romualdez and Tingog Party-list reiterated their call for the public to remain watchful and heed official weather updates as Uwan continues to intensify while moving closer to the Visayas region.
“I call on everyone to stay vigilant and united to ensure zero casualties,” the veteran solon said. “Let us continue working closely with our local governments and agencies, follow official advisories, and always put safety first.”
