P1.86 billion needed for school repairs after 'Tino', shearline damage hundreds of classrooms --- DepEd

The Department of Education (DepEd) said P1.86 billion is needed to repair classrooms damaged by Tropical Storm Tino and the shearline, which disrupted learning in 3,478 public schools across five regions.
DepEd’s latest situation report, released by Media Relations Division Chief Dennis Legaspi on Saturday, November 8, noted that the combined impacts of “Tino” and the shearline have affected nearly 2 million learners and over 79,000 education personnel, prompting a shift to the Flexible Learning Program (FLP) to maintain continuity of education.

According to the report, 2,156 classrooms sustained minor damage, 806 classrooms had major damage, and 391 classrooms were totally destroyed.
DepEd estimated P49,000 per minor-damaged classroom, totaling P1.86 billion for minor repairs.
Additionally, DepEd said P32.52 million is needed for clean-up and clearing operations in 577 schools.
Schools as evacuation centers
To aid affected communities, DepEd said 424 schools across 16 divisions in seven regions are serving as evacuation centers, utilizing 2,564 classrooms to provide temporary shelter.
DepEd assured that it continues to coordinate with local DRRM offices to ensure the safety of learners and staff while mobilizing funds and resources for urgent repairs.
Despite the damage, DepEd said its priority remains the safety of students and the restoration of schools to ensure uninterrupted learning.
“The agency continues to cooperate with its respective local DRRM offices on pre-emptive evacuation efforts and the reporting of the effects of the hazards,” DepEd said.
