Not even with the challenges hounding the team outside the hardcourt, San Sebastian showed grit and held firm for a thrilling 62-61 upset win over league leading University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in the NCAA Season 101 on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the FilOil Centre in San Juan City Saturday, Nov.8.
Ralph Gabat, Chris Ricio, and Jhuniel Dela Rama sank clutch baskets to preserve the Golden Stags’ lead and thwart Patrick Sleat and the Altas’ late comeback in the closing minutes of the payoff period to secure their second straight win.
With the win, San Sebastian improved its record to 3-7, sitting fourth in Group A, while Perpetual remained atop the standings with an 8-2 slate.
“We want to go back-to-back because it’l be part of our growth as a team at good thing nakuha namin ‘yong panalo,” said San Sebastian head coach Rob Labagala.
“I’d like to give credit to my assistant coaches. We really had a serious discussion on how to stop the Altas," he added.
Ricio led the Stags with 17 points, complemented by Dela Rama’s 15 and Gabat’s nine.
Sleat, Perpetual’s lone double-digit scorer, tried to spark a rally with 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists, but his efforts fell short as the Altas suffered the narrow defeat.
Meanwhile, Colegio de San Juan de Letran drew strength from its first-round loss to exact its revenge on Jose Rizal University, 85-71, and get back on the winning track.
Inspired to recover from their 69-73 loss to JRU in their first encounter, the Knights found ways to stay ahead all throughout before denying the Heavy Bombers’ last salvo in the fourth.
Evidently learning from its 0-3 start, Letran made the most of the lessons as it improved to a 6-4 record, tying College of Saint Benilde for second place in the Group B standings, while JRU slipped to 5-5.
“We had to limit them para magkaroon kami ng better chance to get this win. At the same time, siyempre kailangan natin i-maximize ‘yong players natin,” said Letran head coach Allen Ricardo.
“Magagaling ‘tong mga batang ‘to so with respect to their skills level, kailangan as a coach mabigyan mo sila ng situations of their own,” he added.
Jimboy Estrada shone for Letran with 20 points, while Kevin Santos backed him up with 17 points. Titing Manalili, for his part, posted eight points, four rebounds, and nine assists.
Starring for JRU were Shawn Argente and Harry Herrera who uncorked 16 and 14 points, respectively, which all went down the drain.
Up next for Letran is its NCAA archrival San Beda (7-3) this Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Mall of Asia Arena, while JRU squares off with Emilio Aguinaldo College on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the San Juan-based arena.
