Viva artists and directors on doing vertical dramas

Known for their incredible success in TV and film, Viva is now aiming to make a bigger impact with  Viva Movie Box, a new streaming app focused on short, vertical content.
During its official launch held at the Viva Cafe in Araneta on Nov. 4, Valeria Salvador-Del Rosario, President and Chief Operating Officer of Studio Viva, Inc., shared the platform caters to mobile-centric consumers eager for high-quality content.
"With Viva Movie Box, we are effectively translating our established expertise in serialized drama into a new digital medium. Our aim is to utilize the strengths of our creative ecosystem—from talent to production—to deliver compelling, high-volume content. This vertical format allows us to be highly relevant to the next generation of viewers," she said.
Viva Movie Box makes available seven original stories, namely: "Aking Ka Lang," "Elisa: Batang Kabit," "Maid for Revenge," "Love Forbids," "Inagaw na Anak," "A Mistress’ Guide to Moving On," and "She’s Not My Sister."
Ryza Cenon, who's part of the upcoming vertical drama, "Inagaw na Anak'', shared her thoughts on doing the series.
"First time ko gumawa ng vertical drama and marami akong expectations. Kasi ako kapag gumagawa ako ng projects inaaral ko talaga kung paano ko ibabato yung mga lines ko. So, nung dumating kami sa set, inexplain sa amin na kailangan OA yung ibigay namin sa scene. Nag-adjust talaga ako kasi iba yung inaral ko para sa sarili ko bilang artista dun sa script na hinihingi ng director," Ryza said.
(This is my first time doing a vertical drama, and I have high expectations for it. Whenever I work on a project, I really study how to deliver my lines. So when we got to the set, the director explained that we needed to use exaggerated movements for the scenes. I had to make some adjustments because the acting style I had prepared for myself was different from what the director wanted.)
Louise delos Reyes also had to make a few adjustments while shooting their series, "She's not my sister."
"Syempre ang bawat artista may pacing sa lines, hindi ka pwedeng masyadong mabagal kasi may kailangan ka sabihin within that 20 or 30 second kasi alam natin ngayon medyo fast-paced na yung mga tao, may hindi ka lang masabi mag scroll up na sila. So ganun rin dapat sa acting, sunod-sunod tapos onting pahinga," Louise said.
(Of course, every actor has their own pacing when delivering lines. You can’t go too slow, because within those 20 to 30 seconds, you have to get your message across. People consume content so quickly these days—if you take too long, they’ll just scroll past. So it’s the same with acting: you need to keep the rhythm going—deliver one moment after another, then take a brief pause)
For director Easy Ferrer, doing vertical dramas made them strategic and creative when it comes to executing scenes.
"Madami kaming pangangapa na ginawa, pero if there's one thing na need namin i-work out is yung storytelling. Kailangan mas bitawan namin yung processing moments, bitawan yung babad moments kasi we only have two minutes to engage with the audience," Director Easy said.
(We’ve done a lot of research, but if there’s one thing we still need to refine, it’s the storytelling. We have to let go of those long processing or soaking moments, because we only have about two minutes to capture the audience’s attention.)
