All government agencies and the citizenry were encouraged by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) to conduct educational activities for the historic observance of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day on Nov. 7.
In a statement, the NCMF urged the nation to celebrate Muslim heritage during the first-ever nationwide observance of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Day, which has been declared as a special national working holiday.
The historic national observance, according to the NCMF, provides a powerful opportunity for all Filipinos to reflect on the nation's rich multicultural origins.
"In solidarity, the NCMF urges all government agencies, educational institutions, and citizens to utilize this Special National Working Holiday to conduct relevant educational activities and celebrate Muslim heritage as the foundational pillar of national unity," NCMF Secretary Sabuddin Abdurahim said.
"The NCMF stands committed to ensuring that the legacy of Sheikh Karimul Makhdum and the importance of Islamic civilization are permanently and prominently recognized in the history of the Republic," Abdurahim added.
The secretary thanked President Marcos and lawmakers for the passage of Republic Act No. 12228 which mandates the State to "instill inclusivity to all regardless of religious beliefs" and provide "due recognition to the indispensable contributions of Muslim Filipinos in the development of Philippine culture and civilization."
The NCMF chief expressed hopes for more meaningful legislation responsive to the needs and holistic well-being of Muslim Filipinos.
Under RA 12228, Nov. 7 was declared as a special national working holiday throughout the Philippines, commemorating the establishment of the First Philippine Mosque (Masjid Sheikh Karimul Makhdum in Tubig Indangan, Simunul, Tawi-Tawi) and the Introduction of Islam by Sheikh Karimul Makhdum in 1380.
The new law, which was signed on July 9, 2025, strongly complements the legislative recognition previously established by RA 10573 (2013), which declared the Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque a National Historical Landmark, underscoring Islam's vital contribution to our nation's culture.
