'Tino' kills 13 in Negros Oriental

BACOLOD CITY – Thirteen people were killed and 12 remain missing due to typhoon “Tino” in Negros Oriental.

Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police spokesperson, said 12 fatalities and all missing were from Canlaon City where flash flood and lahar from Kanlaon Volcano devastated several homes.

One death was recorded in Vallehermoso.

Search, rescue, and retrieval operations are ongoing.

Several areas, including Guihulngan City – where the typhoon made landfall on Tuesday, Nov. 4, under Signal Numbers 3 and 4 – suffered severe damage.

Polinar said a few injuries were reported, though none were serious, and all police personnel involved in disaster response were safe.

Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, accompanied by Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas, visited Canlaon City on Wednesday, Nov. 5, to assess the situation and oversee relief efforts.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), together with national agencies, coordinated relief and assessment operations.

Sagarbarria reiterated his commitment to support all affected areas and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among government bodies in responding to natural disasters.

He thanked all groups and individuals offering help and solidarity to the people of Canlaon.
