ILOILO CITY — One person died and nearly 139,000 people were displaced in the province of Iloilo and Iloilo City due to typhoon "Tino" on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Cornelio Salinas, chief of the Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said the fatality was in Dumangas town.
Iloilo PDRMMO spokesperson Mia Resano said the 55-year-old female victim drowned after her family’s home was swept away by flood in Barangay Paloc Sool near a river and a fish pen.
One of her two adult children tried to save her but failed. Her daughter retrieved her remains before authorities arrived.
As of Wednesday morning, Iloilo PDRRMO said Tino has affected 120,420 people in 40 out of the 42 towns and component city of Passi.
Four-hundred forty-two homes in Iloilo were damaged by Tino’s strong winds.
Iloilo City was the fifth area where Tino made landfall. This city recorded numerous damage to property due to strong winds but people were safe .
The Iloilo City DRRMO said more than 18,200 families were affected from 121 of the 181 barangays.
These residents from high-risk areas were evacuated ahead of the storm's arrival.
Many towns in the province and Iloilo City suffered long blackouts due to toppled electric poles, some of which were hit by trees.
The Iloilo Electric Cooperatives (ILECOs) and MORE Power were able to bring back electricity to many affected areas.
