Even the Philippine National Police (PNP) is fed up by intense bullying and hate comments on social media.
On Wednesday, acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. emphasized the need to promote a safer and more responsible online environment as he expressed support for the proposed “Emman Atienza Bill.”
The bill, introduced by Senator JV Ejercito that seeks to curb cyberlibel and online hate speech, and Nartate said the proposed law underscores the PNP’s proactive stance in addressing emerging threats in the digital space.
“Currently, the Cybercrime Prevention Act already provides a strong legal framework against cyberlibel and other online offenses. However, with the rapid evolution of social media and digital platforms, there are new forms of online hate and harassment that may not be covered by the existing law,” said Nartatez.
He said the new legislation is necessary to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
“We recognize the importance of updating our legislation, not necessarily to curtail freedom of expression but to ensure accountability and protection for everyone online,” he said.
Nartatez emphasized that the proposed bill aligns with the police force's mission to ensure responsible digital behavior, “If this is enacted into law, this could strengthen our efforts to promote responsible online behavior and to protect our citizens from cyberbullying, online defamation, and hate speech.”
“The PNP fully supports measures that balance digital freedom with responsibility,” he stressed.
