The University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) announced on Tuesday, Nov. 4, that it has imposed a one-game suspension on De La Salle University guard Vhoris Marasigan.
The decision came after Marasigan struck National University’s Omar John in the abdomen with his left fist at 4:52 remaining in the second quarter, while the Bulldogs were leading the Green Archers, 35-31, in their game last weekend at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The 6-foot-1 shooting guard was called for a disqualifying foul afterwards, with NU winning over La Salle, 75-67.
It wouldn’t be the first time Marasigan was involved in an unnecessary play. On Sept. 27, he made contact with University of Santo Tomas playmaker Kyle Paranada in the lower body, earning an unsportsmanlike foul (criteria 1).
The suspension comes at a difficult time for an undermanned La Salle squad, which faces archrival Ateneo (4-5) this Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
La Salle, carrying a 6-4 record and sitting third, will also be without Mason Amos and Kean Baclaan due to injuries, a setback that could further hinder their performance.
The UAAP emphasized that the Taft-based school may file a motion to contest the ruling.
