Typhoon triggers blackout in Negros Occidental

250,000 NEPC customers affected

BACOLOD CITY – More than 250,000 Negros Electric and Power Corp. customers (NEPC) were affected by a total blackout in Negros Occidental triggered by typhoon “Tino.”
An advisory from the power firm said the unscheduled power interruption was reported at 10:41 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, after all Negros Power transmission lines tripped off, resulting in the total loss of power in all feeders within the Negros Power franchise area.
Due to the powerful winds and intense impact of Tino, several of Negros Power’s infrastructures, including poles and distribution lines, sustained heavy damage.
Negros Power covers Bacolod City, Silay City, Talisay City, Bago City, and the towns of Murcia and Don Salvador Benedicto.
Negros Power appealed to barangay captains and local officials to extend assistance by clearing access roads or lanes obstructed by fallen trees and debris, provided it is safe to do so and no electrical hazards are present.
Consumers were encouraged to report any obstructions involving power lines or wires to the Negros Power Community Relations team or any Negros Power Customer Care channels for proper coordination and safety handling.
They assured that their technical and line crews will be dispatched once it is safe, and they are ready to begin massive restoration efforts as soon as weather conditions permit.
“We sincerely ask for the public’s patience and understanding as restoration efforts will take considerable time, given the extent of the damage and the continuing weather risks,” the power firm said.
“Your safety remains our top priority. We share everyone’s eagerness to have electricity restored as soon as possible, but we must also ensure the safety of our linemen who are working tirelessly to bring power back to your homes,” it added.
