Transport agencies on alert as 'Tino' unleashes fury across Visayas, other parts of PH

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez ordered all transport agencies to implement public safety protocols, including suspension of air and sea travels and issuance of timely travel advisories for motorists, in areas affected by typhoon “Tino”.
Lopez said all agencies under the DOTr remain on alert and were also instructed to mobilize personnel and resources for disaster response.
The agencies include the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
“Our emergency and rescue teams were placed on standby 24/7 while coordination continues with local government units to assist stranded passengers. We have mobilized our regional offices to open passenger assistance desks at terminals, ports, and airports, and to provide water, food packs, and blankets in coordination with other government agencies and the local government units,” said Lopez.
Weather experts said “Tino” (international name: Kalmaegi) continues to bring life-threatening conditions over Negros Island as it moves across the Visayas.
Its eye was spotted over Sagay City, Negros Occidental on Tuersday morning and still packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometer per hour (KPH) near the center and gusts of up to 205 kph.
Signal number 4 were hoisted over several areas in the Visayas, while a number of provinces also experienced destructive strong winds and heavy downpour.
Lopez reminded all transport operators and drivers to strictly follow government advisories.
Once weather conditions improve, Lopez said the DOTr will deploy assessment teams to inspect airports, seaports, and land terminals for possible damage and to facilitate the immediate restoration of transport services.
“After the storm, rest assured that the DOTr will assist in the restoration of transport services and provide guidance for fast and convenient travel of our kababayan.
Aside from the DOTr, police and military forces were also mobilized to assist in the conduct of preemptive evacuation and other disaster response in areas along the path of “Tino”.
