As Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) battered the central Philippines on Tuesday, Nov. 4, heavy rain and gusty winds gave a glimpse of the destruction Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) caused nearly 12 years ago.
According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist John Manalo said that as of 1 p.m., the center of the eye of Tino was over the coastal waters of Jordan, Guimaras.
After several landfalls, the typhoon weakened slightly, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 180 kph, while moving westward at 20 kph.
Tino made its initial landfall over Silago, Southern Leyte at 12 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kphnear the center and gusts of up to 205 kph. It went on to make four more landfalls over Borbon, Cebu; Sagay City, Negros Occidental; San Lorenzo, Guimaras; and Iloilo City, Iloilo.
Manalo said that after crossing Panay Island, Tino is expected to move over the Sulu Sea, pass near northern Palawan around midnight, and emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday morning, Nov. 5.
The typhoon may exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Thursday, Nov. 6.
Although not as devastating as Yolanda, Tino still unleashed heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding, causing immense damage in parts of the Visayas.
Both Tino and Yolanda affected central Philippines in early November, though Tino’s intensity and track differed significantly from Yolanda, which made landfall as a super typhoon over Guiuan, Eastern Samar, on Nov. 8, 2013.
Yolanda struck with maximum sustained winds of 235 kph and gustiness of up to 275 kph, making five landfalls—in Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Dulag-Tolosa, Leyte; Daanbantayan, Cebu; Bantayan Island, Cebu; and Concepcion, Iloilo—before moving toward the West Philippine Sea.
The deadly impact of the super typhoon in 2013 was largely caused by its massive storm surge, which swept through low-lying coastal communities, especially in Eastern Visayas.
