The Philippines is looking to collaborate with neighboring Southeast Asian countries on a joint bid to co-host the 2036 Summer Olympics.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick Gregorio disclosed this ambitious campaign recently, saying that he recently spoke with his counterparts from Indonesia for a possible collaboration.
“Ang sinabi ng Southeast Asia, why can’t we just work together to one day host the Olympic Games? Southeast Asia hosting the Olympic Games,” Gregorio said during the presentation of the Asian Youth Games medalists from Team Philippines last Monday, Nov. 3.
“I presented it to President Marcos and sinabi nya, ‘Why not? Plot it,’” he added.
Gregorio said the idea may be long shot, but what is important is taking that first step.
“Ang sabi nga nila, bidding is one thing; winning is another thing. Dun muna tayo sa bidding. Kung ibibigay man nila during our lifetime, at least we started it,” said Gregorio.
“But as I’ve said, it all starts here,” he added.
Collaborating with other Southeast Asian nations in hosting sports events wasn’t new. In 2023, the Philippines, along with Indonesia and Japan, co-hosted the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The country has also recently hosted the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, while the 2025 Junior World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and the first-ever FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup are also scheduled in the coming weeks.
In Olympic history, no Southeast Asian nation has ever hosted the Summer Games. Only three Asian countries -- Japan, South Korea, and China -- have done so.
