Undefeated middleweight prospect Weljon Mindoro is open to the possibility of donning the country’s colors for the boxing team that would compete in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
During the presentation of the 3rd Asian Youth Games medalists on Monday, POC president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino mentioned the inclusion of the 25-year-old Mindoro in the boxing team list.
“Masaya ako kasi nasama ako don, ‘yan din ang pangarap ko dati na makalaro sa SEA Games. Bata palang ako, pangarap ko na yon, pati na rin sa Olympics,” said Mindoro during Tuesday’s PSA Forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.
“Kaya excited ako. Tingin ko handa naman ako kasi hindi naman ako nagpapabaya sa training. Lagi ako nakipag-spar, kahit wala akong laban, hindi ko pinapabayaan yung kondisyon ko,” he added.
Mindoro along with his handlers Gerry Balmes and Orly Barcelango all agreed that being part of the national team is a huge honor.
They’re just waiting for a formal communique from either the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to make everything official.
“Mas maging formal na lang ang meeting. Hindi naman kami hi-hindi. Open po kami. Karangalan naman po ng Pilipinas ang pinaglalaban dito, kahit sino po makausap namin,” said Barcelango.
Before making waves on the international stage, Mindoro first made his mark at the amateur level, winning multiple medals during his youth in the Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy.
Now the International Boxing Association (IBA) Asia middleweight champion, Mindoro is considered one of the country’s top pugilists, boasting an undefeated 16-0-1 record, with every victory coming by knockout.
Mindoro and his team are flying to Japan later this week for a month-long training camp in Japan, looking for possible sparring partners who are actually lacking here in the country.
Trainer Joven Jimenez and former IBF super-flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas also attended the Forum to show their support to the upcoming Filipino fighter, who served as sparring partner of Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial for his last fight against Venezuelan Eddy Colmenares during the Thrilla in Manila 50th anniversary celebration.
