CEBU CITY – Two persons died while thousands were evacuated as typhoon ‘’Tino’’ battered Cebu province on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro confirmed that a body of woman was found in Mandaue City which was one of the areas that experienced severe flooding at the height of the typhoon.
Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 4 was raised in Cebu on Monday night, Nov. 3. Strong winds and heavy rains were felt starting around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, 102,385 individuals from 32,603 families were evacuated.
“This is unprecedented. We were expecting that winds will be strong but it was the floodwater that endangered the lives of the people,” said Baricuatro.
Baricuatro said rescue teams were immediately sent to affected areas.
Baricuatro said Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas had to ask for rescue teams when the Mananga River overflowed, flooding several areas.
"The Mananga River overflowed and it happened while high tide," Baricuatro said.
Several residents in Liloan and Talisay City were forced to climb to the roofs of their houses to escape the raging water.
The body of an elderly man was found in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City.
The victim was a resident of Barangay Bacayan in Cebu City which also experienced severe flooding.
Residents of a subdivision in Barangay Bacayan were trapped on the roofs and turned to social media for help.
When the flood subsided, several cars in Barangay Bacayan were found piled on top of each other after they were swept away by floodwater.
Mayor Nestor Archival said search and rescue is ongoing as there were reports of 12 residents in Barangay Bacayan missing after at least 50 houses were destroyed by the flood.
