Unheralded Magpantay topples Polish rival, captures Qatar 10-ball crown

Jonas Magpantay made sure his presence will be noticed after hammering out a stunning 13-9 win over Poland’s Szymon Kural to reign supreme in the Qatar 10-Ball World Cup (formerly Qatar Open) in Doha on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Coming into the tournament as a qualifier, the 31-year-old cue artist flashed his brilliance right away by taking an early 6-2 lead which he catapulted to an 8-4 breakaway in their race-to-13 clash -- a separation that the Polish bet tried to overcome but ultimately failed -- for his biggest win in his career so far.
Living up to his moniker of “The Silent Killer”, Magpantay quietly bested each of his opponents before outlasting Kural in the finale to hoist the coveted trophy and the hefty grand winner’s purse of $100,000 (around P5.8 million).
Though the path wasn’t smooth-sailing at all for the Bansud, Oriental Mindoro native as he needed to display his A-game against the globe's top-notch cue artists included in the 128-man field.
He started his run with qualifying-round victories over Qatar’s Abdullatif Alfawal (9-0) and Japan’s Naoyuki Oi (9-6), then beat Hungarian Oliver Szolnoki (11-7) in Last 64 before he overcame his biggest test via an 11-8 upset against multi-world champion Carlo Biado in Round of 32.
He extended his winning ways off a Round-of-16 triumph over Poland’s Wojciech Szewczyk (11-5) that he followed up with rousing beating of Dutch Niels Feijen (11-7) and German Moritz Neuhausen (11-6) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
Filipino world champions Johann Chua and Biado also lauded Magpantay after pulling off an impressive campaign in the tournament.
"Masaya kaming lahat na dumating narin yung araw na napatunayan mo ang galing mo sa buong mundo," Chua wrote on his social media post. "Sana sa panalo mong to mas maraming pang sumunod sayo at mainspire. Maraming salamat sa karangalan."
"Lord God Ang bilis mo naman binigay ang birthday wish ko na sana Filipino ang mag champion sa Qatar," said Biado.
