Christmas came early for Filipino medalists at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain after the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) are set to give them cash incentives.
The announcement came on Monday, Nov. 3, during the Philippine team's medal presentation at the East Ocean Palace in Paranaque City.
The ceremony also honored the 143-athlete PH squad that went home with seven gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals.
“Tinutukan na natin ‘to, sinong mananalo sa AYG at sa Youth Olympic Games, yan narin ang mananalo sa Olympics at sa Asian Games, wag na nating bitawan ‘to. I’m sure alam natin that is the right pathway,” said PSC Chairman Patrick “Patro” Gregorio.
“Talaga pong itakbo na natin ‘to, i-slam dunk na natin ‘to hanggang 2028… Philippine sports is up there,” he added.
The PSC will give P500,000 to gold medalists, P300,000 for silver medalists and P100,000 bronze medalists.
On the other hand, the POC plans to give each medalist with a brand-new iPhone 17, as well as additional cash bonuses of P250,000 for gold winners, P150,000 for silver, P 75,000 for bronze winners.
“We beat the record of [the Philippines] last edition of AYG… grabe din kasi ‘yong suporta do’n, kung makita nyo lang ang Bahrain, puno ng Pilipino ang stadium,” said POC chief Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, noting the two-gold finish in 2013 Nanjing, China edition.
“Dito lahat tayo nagsisimula, before elite, Olympics, ‘to ang first stage natin kaya dapat bigyan ng importansya,” he added.
Among the attendees were gold medalists Pi Durden Wangkay (athletics), Isabella Butler (jiu-jitsu), Charlie Ratcliffe (Girls’ modern MMA), and muay bets Jan Brix Ramiscal and Tyron Jamborillo (Mixed team mai muay), Lyre Anie Ngina (Girls’ wai kru), and Zeth Gabriel Bueno (Boys’ wai kru).
“No expectations po, pero masaya po ako na nakapag-deliver kami ng medal… [nakita] ko po na may potential po ako na more than SEA area, kaya korin sa Asia,” said Wangkay, who is vying in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games this December in Thailand.
Also in attendance was weightlifter Jodie Peralta.
With 24 medals, the Philippines wrapped up its campaign at 12th place in the overall medal standings with China (63-49-35), Uzbekistan (37-16-28), Kazakhstan (24-29-40), Iran (22-18-36), and Thailand (15-15-18) completing the Top 5 in the final tally.
According to Tolentino, several of the top performers would be able to compete in the Olympic Youth Games in Senegal next year.
