The Philippine Army (PA) placed its disaster response units on alert as typhoon “Tino” advanced toward Eastern Visayas on Monday, Nov. 3.
A total of 417 humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) teams composed of 4,376 officers, enlisted personnel, Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members, and reservists were mobilized for possible deployment to areas expected to be affected by the storm, said PA spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala.
Army major units across the Visayas, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, and Metro Manila have been instructed to coordinate closely with national and local agencies, including disaster risk reduction offices, to ensure quick and coordinated relief and rescue operations.
Dema-ala said Army units were prepared to conduct evacuation, rescue, and relief distribution missions once local authorities declare the need for assistance.
“The Army is now coordinating with national government agencies, local government units, local disaster risk reduction and management offices and other responders for swift and orchestrated HADR efforts in communities that lay on the typhoon’s path,” he noted.
Residents in vulnerable areas were also urged to monitor official weather updates and follow evacuation advisories to ensure their safety.
The center of typhoon TINO was estimated at 235 kilometers east southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 2 p.m., according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
It was moving westward at a speed of 25 km per hour (kph). It has maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph, the state weather bureau added.
