House Assistant Majority Leader Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong spoke out on Monday, Nov. 3 against those ridiculing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), which arguably became "trendy" after a solon-colleague of his began to do it.
In a statement, Adiong strongly condemned the online mockery and disinformation against PCG personnel, who courageously document water-bombing and ramming incidents by foreign vessels.
“The brave men and women of the [PCG] should be celebrated, not attacked, ridiculed, or mocked,” declared the Mindanaoan.
“Those who mock the PCG for speaking out against water cannon attacks are not just insensitive—they are complicit in normalizing aggression against our sovereign rights. These incidents are acts of intimidation and violence. They should never be taken lightly,” he warned.
While Adiong didn't mention him by name, it was "congressmeow" Cavite 4th district Rep. Francisco "Kiko" Barzaga who arguably, made such attacks against the PCG fashionable. Barzaga's Facebook posts on the topic routinely get tens of thousands of likes and reactions.
Arbitrarily, Barzaga--a proud rage-baiter--accused PCG of being a corrupt agency and began calling it the "Philippine Crocodile Guard". He called for the abolition of the PCG, which he claimed was pulling the Philippines closer to World War III.
Last week, the gen Z solon from Dasmariñas City wrote a celebratory post that read: "MyCoast Guard Abolition Speech has reached International News! Now the whole worldis aware of the Philippine Coast Guard's corruption! #AbolishPCG."
Adiong doesn't find the attacks against the reputation of the PCG funny. “Spreading disinformation at our coast guard for standing firm in the face of harassment only plays into the hands of those who wish to undermine our sovereignty."
“This is not humor—it is a dangerous narrative that weakens national resolve,” he underscored.
The "Young Guns" bloc member urged the public to remain vigilant against personalities who amplify China’s propaganda, downplay aggression in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), and ridicule the PCG’s lawful defense of Philippine waters.
“Nakakalungkot po na isipin na may Pilipino na nagpapagamit sa naratibo laban sa ating magigiting na miyembro ng [PCG] — dapat po nating labanan ang fake news na kanilang pinapakalat," he said, without naming anyone.
(It is saddening to think that there are Filipinos who allow themselves to be used in a narrative against our brave members of the [PCG] — we must fight the fake news they are spreading.)
Bill to modernize PCG
To show that he's serious with his remarks, Adiong also filed House Bill (HB) No.5552, which sought the long-overdue modernization of the PCG.
“This bill is a tribute to the courage of our coast guard and a rebuke to those who belittle their sacrifice,” Adiong said. “We will not allow disinformation, mockery, or silence to erode our claim to what is rightfully ours.”
The measure bats for a streamlined, AFP/PNP-aligned rank and promotion system; strengthened functional commands for maritime safety, environmental protection, and law enforcement; deputization of Filipino fishermen as Bantay Dagat Auxiliary Patrol Officers with hazard pay, insurance, and equipment; full scholarships for children of PCG personnel killed in the line of duty; and arity in pay, allowances, and retirement benefits with the AFP.
