BACOLOD CITY – A total of 242 families or 933 individuals have been evacuated in this highly-urbanized city on Monday night, Nov. 3, as this city was placed under signal No. 3 due to typhoon “Tino.”
Evacuees were 20 families in Barangays 2 and 3; five each in Barangays 1 and 13; 15 at the Bredco port; 27 in Barangay Sum-ag; one in Barangay Villamonte; 30 in Barangay Singcang-Airport; three each in Barangays Mansilingan and Bata; 67 in Barangay Pahanocoy; two in Barangay Punta Taytay; 35 in Barangay Banago; four in Barangay 14, and 22 in Barangay Tangub.
These displaced families were temporarily sheltered in various school evacuation centers here.
Mayor Greg Gasataya said they are closely monitoring the situation in all evacuation centers.
Teams are on-site to ensure the well-being of evacuees while city personnel continue to assess conditions in affected areas.
“We remain in full coordination with departments, partner agencies, and officials to address any additional needs as they arise,” he said.
Eight barangays in this highly urbanized city usually flooded during heavy rains were earlier subjected to preemptive evacuation.
Dr. Laarni Pornan, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), identified these villages as Barangays 1, 2, 3, Mandalagan (Carvic), Banago (GK), Pahanocoy, Sum-ag, and Singcang-Airport.
Gasataya inspected some areas on Monday and checked on the city’s disaster readiness. Rapid deployment teams and equipment are ready for mobilization.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-Emergency Operations Center (BCDRRMC-EOC) has been placed under red alert status and disaster response clusters have been activated.
Gasataya issued an executive order on Monday suspending work in government offices on Tuesday, Nov. 4, upon the recommendation of the CDRRMC.
Offices whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and /or performance of other vital services shall continue their operations and render the necessary services, he said.
Gasataya encouraged private companies, business establishments, and institutions to suspend work in their offices and workplaces to ensure the safety and protection of their employees during the storm’s passage.
“We lift everything and we pray that Bacolod and Negros Occidental will be spared from the typhoon. We cannot afford these things especially with the recent tremors and activities of Kanlaon Volcano,” the mayor said.
He said the city is doing everything to ensure that it can face this calamity prepared and equipped, with teams on the ground, systems in place, and everyone working together to keep the city safe.
Three shopping malls here offered assistance to stranded residents by opening their establishments beyond mall hours for charging, temporary shelter, and usage of Wi-Fi connectivity. Overnight parking was allowed with waived fees.
