The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday, Nov. 2 said a tropical storm with the international name “Kalmaegi” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at 5:30 a.m. and was assigned the local name “Tino.”
Tino is the 20th tropical cyclone to form or enter the PAR in 2025 and the first for November.
As of 5 a.m., it was located 1,230 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas.
According to PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina, Tino may make landfall over Caraga Region or Eastern Visayas by Tuesday morning, Nov. 4.
He added that the tropical storm could start to affect weather and sea conditions within the next 24 hours.
“Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 will be raised over Eastern Visayas and Caraga within the day,” Badrina said, adding that based on the intensity forecast, Tino is expected to strengthen into a typhoon, with Signal No. 4 possibly being the highest warning level that may be hoisted.
A gale warning may also be issued over Eastern Visayas and Caraga by Sunday evening or early Monday due to rough to very rough seas.
PAGASA said the onset of heavy rains is likely by Monday, Nov. 3.
Rainfall of 100 to 200 millimeters (heavy to intense) is expected over Eastern Samar and Dinagat Islands, while 50 to 100 mm (moderate to heavy) may occur over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, and Surigao del Norte.
By Tuesday, Nov. 4, rainfall of 100 to 200 mm is forecast over Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Guimaras, and Dinagat Islands.
Rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 mm may also affect Romblon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Antique, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Siquijor, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Zamboanga del Norte.
Meanwhile, the shear line, or the boundary between the northeast monsoon and easterlies, will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon.
Rainfall of 50 to 100 mm is expected over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur on Monday, and over Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur on Tuesday.
PAGASA advised residents in low-lying and mountainous areas to remain vigilant against possible flooding and rain-induced landslides.
