Caraga on alert as 'Tino' nears

BUTUAN CITY – Local government units (LGUs) in the Caraga region are bracing for the possible impacts of tropical storm ‘’Tino’’ which is expected to begin affecting the area on Monday.

As of 11 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed the province of Dinagat Islands, along with Siargao Island and Bucas Grande Islands in Surigao del Norte, under tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1.

Dinagat Islands Gov. Nilo Demerey Jr. convened the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) for a disaster risk assessment meeting attended by provincial officials, representatives from national government agencies, and partner organizations.

Demerey told residents to be ready and consistently monitor updates and advisories from concerned agencies and provincial government.

Following PAGASA’s bulletin, the Coast Guard stations in Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Siargao Island suspended sea travels.

Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Lyndon Barbers said the PDRRMC has already convened in preparation for the possible impacts of Tino.

Barbers also advised residents, especially those in coastal communities, to monitor weather updates and advisories.

The Department of Tourism in Caraga on Saturday night issued an advisory urging tourists to exercise caution, follow local directives, and temporarily refrain from island-hopping or engaging in water activities until after the storm’s expected landfall on Nov. 4. (PNA)
