BACOLOD CITY – The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is investigating the claim of a police staff sergeant that he accidentally shot his lover, a 42-year-old single mother, dead.
The body of the victim – Kristine Joy Dignadice – was found in a sugarcane field in Barangay Don Jorge Araneta, Bago City, Negros Occidental on Nov. 1.
Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the death of Dignadice, a resident of Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region has yet to release specific details about the incident as they have yet to see the suspect’s affidavit and has yet to sign it.
His service firearm has been turned over for examination and autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death.
The PRO-NIR and the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), where the suspect was assigned, particularly Police Station 5, condemned the incident, and assured a transparent probe into the case.
Dignadice's car was discovered abandoned with bloodstains in a sugarcane field in Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental on Oct. 29.
Three days later, the 43-year-old suspect surrendered to authorities, leading to the discovery of the victim's body.
No other details have been provided on how the victim's body was dumped in Bago City and her car was left irregularly parked in Hinigaran.
National Police Commission Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan has directed the Inspection, Monitoring, and Investigation Service to conduct a motu proprio investigation of the case.
Calinisan said that Napolcom will take immediate cognizance of the case as it involves an active member of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“The Napolcom will ensure that due process is observed and that the erring police officer will be held fully accountable. The administrative case will proceed separately from any criminal proceedings filed before the court,” Calinisan said.
He assured the public that Napolcom remains steadfast in pursuing disciplinary action against police personnel who violate the law and the code of conduct of the PNP.
Negros Occidental third district Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez sought the help of national agencies in probing the incident and acknowledged their immediate response.
“What I can say for certain is... this is how not to get away with murder," the lawmaker said.
Benitez said that he remains in close coordination with them to ensure accountability and transparency.
He said that Victorias City mourned the brutal death of Dignadice in the hands of someone sworn to serve and protect.
”This act is beyond acceptance. We shall not be silent. We shall not allow one man’s crime to stain the honor of those who wear the uniform with integrity and compassion. Justice must and shall prevail.”
Bacolod Rep. Albee Benitez said that Dignadice's tragic death is heartbreaking and her loss is deeply felt by all who believe that no one should ever fear the very people sworn to protect them.
He urged the PNP to remain transparent, to disclose to the public the whole truth, and ensure that justice is served.
Benitez recognized steps taken by the PNP to hold one of their own accountable.
"They must continue to do so because Kristine Joy and her family deserve justice and we deserve a police force worthy of our trust," he said.
