Senator Raffy Tulfo has called on the government of Japan to open more employment opportunities for Filipino nurses and transportation workers.
Tulfo made the call during the recently-concluded 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he held a bilateral meeting with the Japanese delegation led by Fujii Kazuhiro.
During the meeting, Tulfo discussed the plight of the 50,706 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Japan with Kazuhiro and expressed his appreciation for the good treatment of the OFWs in their country.
Tulfo said he is elated over what he called “strong and friendly relationship between the governments of Japan and the Philippines.”
In turn, Kazuhiro expressed his gratitude to the senator for the significant contribution of Filipino workers to Japan, noting that the Philippines has a younger population compared to Japan’s aging population.
Tulfo, then, recommended toKazuhiro the opening of more employment opportunities for Filipino nurses in Japan, which he said would greatly help in providing care for the elderly in their country.
The senator also vowed to personally coordinate with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to facilitate the hiring of Filipino nurses in Japan.
Kazuhiro agreed with Tulfo’s proposal stating that the Japanese government is ready to accept Filipino nurses and assist them in acquiring advanced skills in patient care.
At the same time, Tulfo praised Japan’s public mass transit system, to which Kazuhiro mentioned that Japan is facing manpower shortages.
The lawmaker then, again suggested that Filipino transport workers could be recruited to work in Japan. He also promised to coordinate with the DMW on this matter.
