Makati gov't boosts support for public school students, seniors

The Makati City government had passed two new ordinances paving the way for more financial and social aid for the city's public school students and senior citizens, Makati City Mayor Nancy Binay said on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Binay said City Ordinance No. 2025-A-024 enables the city to provide all public school students from day care to senior high school, including SPED learners, with cash and rice incentives to help their parents with their families' financial needs and ensure the students' focus in studying remains. 

The ordinance will be implemented in 2026. 

"Sa ilalim ng ordinansa, makakatanggap ng P3,500 ang mga mag-aaral sa Day Care, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, at Elementary, habang P7,000 naman ang matatanggap ng mga mag-aaral sa Junior High School at Senior High School tuwing June at December. Bukod dito, makakatanggap din ang bawat mag-aaral ng limang kilo ng bigas kada buwan bilang karagdagang tulong sa kanilang pamilya (Under the ordinance, students in Day Care, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Elementary will receive P3,500, while students in Junior High School and Senior High School will receive P7,000 every June and December. In addition, each student will also receive five kilos of rice per month as additional assistance to their families)," Binay explained.

The Makati City Council had also approved City Ordinance No. 2025-A-023, or the "Makati Senior Citizens Assistance and Inclusion Program," wherein qualified senior citizens will receive P12,000 cash incentives, which will be divided into two payouts, as well as 10 kilos of rice subsidy.

The city government is also set to build a Senior Citizens Employment Desk for seniors who still wish to work.

Just like City Ordinance No. 2025-A-024, this ordinance will also be implemented in 2026.

In August, the mayor personally led the house-to-house distribution of unclaimed cash incentives to Makati Blu Card holders who failed to receive them last year.

More than 12,000 elderly residents failed to receive their cash incentives last year, citing the lack of cellphones and failure to update their GCash accounts as the main reasons.

“As promised, their cash incentives are being delivered at their doorstep. This is to ensure that they receive it personally without hassles or glitches. This benefit is for them, so let’s spare them from any burden or difficulty in obtaining it," Binay said.

Under City Ordinance No. 2025-104, the total cash incentives to be received in two equal installments by every active member of the Blu Card Program are as follows: P4,000 for ages 60–69, P5,000 for 70–79, P6,000 for 80–89, P11,000 for 90–99, and P12,000 for ages 101 and above. 

Those who will celebrate their 100th birthday will continue to receive P100,000 and a plaque of appreciation from the city government.
